In an NPR 2005 "This I Believe" essay John Updike wrote: "I seem most instinctively to believe in the human value of creative writing, whether in the form of verse or fiction, as a mode of truth-telling, self-expression and homage to the twin miracles of creation and consciousness."
"Creativity is a central source of meaning in our lives...most of the things that are interesting, important, and human are the results of creativity...[and] when we are involved in it, we feel that we are living more fully than during the rest of life. "

BEING ME
Being me and that's not easy
I don't know why it is do or die
Be me and stay alive
or clam up and take a dive
There is something special about me
There are many things which I can see
Even though I still don't feel free
I don't feel free to be me
Being like you has always been a possibility
And this has never set me free
Being like you want me to be
Is still nothing like me being me
I want to be more like myself
I want to see more of my true wealth
I want the person that I am to come out
I want to rid myself of my fear and doubt
I want to be more so I can be at peace with my soul
I want to be more so I can live to grow old
I want to be more so I can try and survive
I want to be more so I can stay alive
Being me is all I have left to be
Every one I've tried to please can't let me be me
Its something I gotta be
I gotta be me
and maybe then I can be free
What is the source of our suffering? It lies in the fact that we hesitated to speak. It was born of the moment when we accumulated silent things within us. ----Gaston Bachelaud
